Why visit

Burgundy's town of Beaune is home to the Hôtel-Dieu, also called the Hospices de Beaune, founded in 1443 under the patronage of Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor to the Duke of Burgundy. It is owned by the Hospices Civils de Beaune.

You visit the Hôtel-Dieu freely with an audioguide. The tourist office suggests allowing about 1.5 hours or more. Admission is €12.50 ($14) for a full-rate adult, €9.50 ($10) for the "other" rate and €6.25 ($7) for the reduced rate.

The Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction takes place every year on the third Sunday in November. The Marché aux Vins sits across from the Hospices de Beaune and runs cellar tours and tastings in its cellars and in the former 13th-century Church of the Cordeliers.

Visiting the estates

Two cellars that welcome visitors are Caves Patriarche Père & Fils and the Marché aux Vins. Caves Patriarche is at 5 rue du Collège and runs a self-guided tour with a tasting of six wines. The Marché aux Vins offers cellar tours and tastings.
