Why visit

Pauillac is home to three first growths: Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Latour and Château Mouton Rothschild. The town has 18 Grands Crus Classés in the 1855 classification, including 3 Premiers Crus, plus 1 Cru Bourgeois and 1 winemaking cooperative. It is in the Médoc, in the Bordeaux wine region, 50 minutes by car from the city of Bordeaux.

The Pauillac appellation was officially established in 1936. It covers 1,220 hectares under vine, 7.5% of all vines in the Médoc, tended by 47 winegrowers across independent châteaux, estates and cooperatives.

Pauillac sits on the estuary, and Château Duhart-Milon has its cellars in the village center near the docks. The marina, Pauillac-La-Fayette, takes arrivals by boat.

The Maison du Tourisme et du Vin de Pauillac, at La Verrerie, is the headquarters of the Médoc-Vignoble tourist office. It has a vinothèque with wines from the 8 Médoc appellations.

Visiting the estates

Most visits in Pauillac are by appointment or booking, so plan ahead rather than turning up at the gate. The table shows the starting fee for each of four estates; longer and premium visits cost more.

Spit at tastings, and agree on a designated driver before you set out.

When to go

There is no single season for all of Pauillac's estates, so match your dates to the châteaux you want. Duhart-Milon (Monday to Friday) and Pichon Baron both receive visitors year-round.

Pichon Baron's visitor center and shop also open on Saturdays from May to November. Lynch-Bages opens Monday to Saturday, and neither Duhart-Milon nor Lynch-Bages takes visits on Sundays.

The main closure to plan around is the harvest, when Mouton Rothschild suspends its tours. Ask the tourist office which estates are open on your dates.

The Pauillac tourist office is open Monday to Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., from January 2 to March 31.

Before you go

  • Château Mouton Rothschild receives visitors by appointment only, asks for bookings at least two months ahead and suspends tours during the harvest.
  • Château Pichon Baron's tours and tastings are all private and need a reservation, though its reception and shop take walk-ins on weekdays.
  • Estates keep limited days: Duhart-Milon is open Monday to Friday only and Lynch-Bages Monday to Saturday, so Sunday visits are not possible at either.

Pauillac station, on TER line 42, is at 2 place de Verdun with a ticket machine outside, and Duhart-Milon's cellars are in the village center near the docks.
